Three rules matter most for daily silver wear: keep the piece away from sulfur-containing chemicals, avoid hard knocks and friction, and take it off before showering, exercising, or hot springs. 925 silver itself is stable, but sweat, sulfur in hot springs, cosmetics, and perfume speed up tarnishing, while impact can loosen prongs and bend ring shanks.
When not worn, keep silver in an airtight bag or a lined jewelry box, because air slows the tarnish reaction. Store pieces separately in soft cloth so they do not scratch each other. Clean with lukewarm water and a drop of mild detergent, brush gaps with a soft toothbrush, and dry with a cotton cloth. Toothpaste is too abrasive and will scratch the plating. For tarnish, rub in one direction with a silver polishing cloth, or send the piece back for professional re-plating. Keep a small anti-tarnish cloth in the jewelry box and give each piece a light once-a-month rub to extend the time between professional re-plating services.
If a ring shank bends, a prong feels loose, or a clasp fails, stop wearing the piece and send it for repair, or a stone may fall out. Redness or itchiness on the skin can point to nickel in the plating or to a worn plating layer exposing the base metal. Stop wearing and inspect the finish.
