What is Oxidized Silver?
Oxidized (Thai) Silver is 925 silver surface-treated with sulfide to form a black silver sulfide (Ag₂S) layer. Raised areas are polished bright while recesses stay dark, creating a vintage contrast.
The Chemistry
Silver reacts with sulfur compounds: 4Ag + 2H₂S + O₂ → 2Ag₂S (black). This happens naturally—that's why silver tarnishes. Oxidized silver intentionally accelerates and controls this process.
Process
- Polished silver dipped in potassium sulfide solution (seconds to minutes)
- Even black Ag₂S film forms
- Raised details brushed/polished bright
- Recesses remain black for vintage contrast
- Optional clear lacquer seal
Market Trend
Oxidized silver has trended strongly in 2024–2026: stackable rings, dark-style pendants, vintage earrings. Target demographic: ages 18–35 seeking individuality. Retail price premium: 20–30% over bright-finish silver.
